Sativa is one of the two traditional categories of cannabis, along with indica. Sativa plants are native to warmer regions near the equator.
The plant
Sativas grow tall and lanky, with long, narrow, light green leaves. They take longer to flower and do best in warm climates with long growing seasons.
The reputation
Sativas are commonly described as energizing and uplifting – a “head high” associated with daytime use, creativity and socializing.
The reality
As with indica, the label alone is not a reliable guide. Most modern strains are hybrids, and effects depend largely on cannabinoid and terpene content. Terpenes such as limonene and pinene are often associated with a brighter, more alert feel.
Some people find high-THC sativa-type strains can trigger anxiety or a racing mind. If that is you, try a lower-THC option or one with some CBD.
