The history of cannabis dispensaries in Arkansas began in November 2016 when voters narrowly approved the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment, making it the first Bible Belt state to legalize medical cannabis. Despite the legal victory, the rollout faced significant delays due to regulatory hurdles, legal challenges, and administrative bottlenecks. It wasn’t until May 2019 that the state’s very first dispensary, Doctor’s Orders Arkansas in Hot Springs, finally opened its doors to patients. Since that milestone, the market has expanded steadily, with dozens of licensed dispensaries now operating across the state, serving over 90,000 registered patients and generating hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity while continuing to navigate the evolving landscape of southern cannabis culture and regulation.
